ACMS Speaker Series I Darcy Maier

Speaker: Darcy Maier, English Education and Community Development Peace Corps Volunteer, Mongolia

“Teaching English as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mongolia”

Arriving in Mongolia in October 2023 at the age of 64, Darcy began her journey as an English teacher at Public School 24 in Ulaanbaatar. Over the past year, she has not only taught students with enthusiasm but also contributed to vital community initiatives such as the American Corner, MakeUspace, and the ACMS Library.

Darcy joined the ACMS Library team in February 2024, where she took on the monumental task of completing a full book inventory, cataloging, and classifying the collection. Her meticulous work and commitment to excellence have greatly enhanced the library’s operations, making her an invaluable member of the ACMS community.

Reflecting on her time in Mongolia, Darcy shared,
“Being a Peace Corps volunteer in Mongolia has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I have learned so much. I have been so touched at how excited Mongolian people are. The Mongolian people are so thrilled to have us that it’s such a pleasure to be able to work with them as well. I would like to believe that I have made a difference in some people’s lives that I have worked with here, and I know that they have made a huge difference in my life. And so I will be forever grateful to Mongolia as well as proud to have been a Peace Corps volunteer here.”

Darcy’s recent presentation, Teaching English as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mongolia, was featured as part of the ACMS Speaker Series. During her talk, she shared valuable insights into her experiences and observations, providing thoughtful recommendations for the ongoing transition in Mongolian public schools. The full presentation is available to watch on the ACMS YouTube channel.

Darcy’s background as a Medical Social Worker, along with her education—a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a Master’s in Social Work from Portland State University—has shaped her lifelong commitment to service and learning.

As Darcy concludes her volunteer service, ACMS extends its deepest gratitude for her remarkable contributions. Her work has inspired all who have had the privilege of working alongside her, and her legacy will continue to resonate within the ACMS and the Mongolian community. We wish her success in all her future endeavors.
