Exhibition & Reception: Mongolia’s Democracy Revolution

American Center for Mongolian Studies (ACMS) is excited to announce the upcoming exhibition and reception “Mongolia’s Democracy Revolution” in co-sponsorship with the University of British Columbia (UBC) School of Public Policy and Global Affairs.

Featured as the first exhibition of the year 2026 in the Lobby Gallery’s Solidarity series (a gallery at the Liu Institute for Global Issues at UBC), “Mongolia’s Democracy Revolution” is the latest addition to the many contemplative and multidisciplinary works at the Gallery.

This particular installment presents a reflection on the Mongolian Democratic Revolution through historic moments captured by the Finnish journalist and producer Irja Halasz. The pieces grant glimpses into the 1990 events in Ulaanbaatar: protestors challenging the monopolistic Communist Party state, Mongolians unifying under the aspiration to create a democratic society, and other prominent depictions of the revolution.

The photographer Irja Halasz is one of the witnesses of the revolution, and she reported on the early progress of the revolution to an international audience. In addition to this contribution, Irja Halasz was also a close confidant of Zorig Sanjaasuren, one of the most central figures of the revolution.

The exhibit is available for the public at the Lobby Gallery of the Liu Institute for Global Studies from February 23 to March 27, 2026. To register for the reception, which is occurring on March 17, 2026, please visit this link. To learn more about the two event, follow this link.
