Echoes of the Past

Archaeology in the Khoid Tamir Valley

Become a detective of the deep past in Mongolia's Khoid Tamir River Valley. Led by a team of expert archaeologists from the National University of Mongolia's Institute for Nomadic Archaeology in cooperation with the 20th field season of the Mongolia-Monaco Joint Archaeological Mission, this exclusive educational tour provides the opportunity to not only visit the many historical sites in the area, but to join and contribute to a real archaeological expedition focused on the stunning stone monuments known as deer stones.

One of the most iconic images of Mongolian archaeology, deer stones are also one of the most mysterious. Archaeologists are still trying to understand who exactly created these magnificent monuments-over two thousand years before Genghis Khan conquered half the world-and why.

You can help uncover their origins while exploring the Valley's UNESCO World Heritage List-inscribed Bronze Age Deer Stone Site, which features over 100 deer stones as well as numerous Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age ceremonial mounds and burials. Learn archaeological survey techniques, get your hands dirty excavating, and deepen your knowledge of the past by conducting field laboratory analysis alongside seasoned archaeologists.

This program is a joint effort between ACMS and the National University of Mongolia's Institute of Nomadic Archaeology. The onsite portion of the tour will be held at the Mongolia-Monaco Join Archaeological Mission's Khoid Tamir Valley Research and Exhibition Center.
