At the end of 2007, Mongolia’s population was 2,635,200[1] with about a third of the population residing in the capitol city, Ulaanbataar.[2] Because Mongolia has a total area of 1,564,116 sq km, its low population makes it the most sparsely populated independent country in the world.[3][4] The population is also very young with about one third of the total being under the age of 20. The growth rate is 1.5% per year.[5]

In 2007 the population increased 1.3 percent or 40.4 thousand. Men accounted for 48.7 percent, and women 51.3 percent, giving a ratio of 95 males per 100 females. In that same year about 60.8 percent of the total population or 1.6 million people lived in urban areas. More than half the populations in Dornod, Dornogovi, Govisimber, Darkhan-Uul, and Orkhon aimags were living in urban areas. In Tuv aimag, however, more than 80 percent of the population lived in rural areas. The population of Mongolia was 4.1 persons per household. The birthrate per 1000 people was 21.7 in 2007. This is an increase by 2.7 percent since 2006. The number of live births in 2007 was an increase of 24.5 percent from 2004 figures and an increase of 15.4 percent from 2006 figures. Total fertility rate was 2.0 in 2004, 1.9 in 2005, 2.1 in 2006 and 2.3 in 2007, showing an overall increase those four years. The crude death rate was relatively constant those same years. The crude death rate was 6.2 in 2007, including infant mortality. In 2007, 16300 persons died, of whom 6.1 percent were infants. The death rate varied amongst aimags from the highest in Khuvsgul (7.1), Darkhan-Uul(6.9), Khentii (6.8), and Orkhon (6.8) to the lowest in Umnugovi (4.3), Bayan-Ulgii (4.9), Khovd (5.0), Dornogovi (5.4). In 2007, 41000 people were married, 1800 thousand people were divorced, and 2500 children had been adopted. Compared with the previous year, the divorce rate increased by 21.3 percent and adoption rate by 19.6 percent. The marriage rate increased steadily between 2004 and 2006 but decreased in 2007 by 3.3 points from 2006. In 2005, the marriage rate increased by 0.3 points from 2004 [6].
